Trailer Time #1

I enjoy movies, but I often find it difficult to find the time to sit down and watch them as often as I’d like. With a home, and a family, plus all the other hobbies I try to find time for, it becomes increasingly strenuous to find a two hour block to sit and appreciate cinema. As my ability to watch movies themselves diminishes, I’ve acquired an immense interest in movie trailers. In two minutes, a trailer needs to sell me on a film. It needs to condense the artist’s vision while keeping a high level of interest, but without giving too much away. It’s a tough balance to master. Every week, I am going to find my “Top 5 Movie Trailers” and rank them according to a combination of many factors, but in the end is mostly just the five that capture my attention most. I hope you join me every week in discovering what interesting films are knocking on our doorsteps. And now…. It’s Trailer Time.

Honorable Mention(s): Domino

#5 The Dead Don’t Die

Trailer #1

Director: Jim Jarmusch

Starring: Bill Murray, Adam Driver

I was very close to not having this make the list, and honestly I still don’t feel great about it. The minute I heard a zombie talk, I was pretty out on this film. The trailer itself is a fun time though. It’s got good music, shows some fun stuff and it’s a different take on the zombie genre, but overall the movie isn’t it for me. It feels like the trailer is going to be the peak of this movie in my eyes.

#4 Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile

Trailer #2

Director: Joe Berlinger

Starring: Zac Efron, Lily Collins

The first trailer for this god awfully named movie (seriously, it’s a terrible name) didn’t quite grab me. We just had the Bundy doc on netflix, but this seemed to be a little more playful than the serious story it’s resembling. This second trailer brings a lot more darkness and intrigue to it. They still really ham up the fact that girls really liked Bundy to a point that it seems to be incredibly unrealistic, but it’s a good trailer and it grabbed my attention.

#3 The Silence

Trailer #1

Director: John R. Leonetti

Starring: Stanley Tucci, Kiernan Shipka

Here is another movie that feels a lot like A Quiet Place and Bird Box. Seems like a fairly recent dystopian future in a world where a monster latches onto you if you fail to adhere to a restriction to a particular sense. In this case, it’s sound again and we have crazy ass bats that will chase you down if they hear you. I’m not tired of this formula yet and the movie seems tense and interesting and stars Stanley Tucci, which is a big plus for me.

#2 The Avengers: Endgame

Final Trailer

Directors: The Russo Brothers

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Everyone else

This is my favorite Endgame trailer so far. It’s the first one that seems to show us anything substantial at all and it’s still not even that much. Plus after the marketing for Infinity War, half the stuff could actually not even be in the movie. I, along with everyone else in the world, don’t really care either way. Show me anything and I’ll latch onto it. This trailer gives us Tony meeting back up with Pepper and Cap and we get our first look at Thanos and oh man this movie is going to be exciting.

#1 Joker

Teaser Trailer

Director: Todd Phillips

Starring: Joaquin Phoenix

I wasn’t originally thinking this was going to be my first #1 for Trailer Time, but I just keep watching this trailer. I watch it when I have only a couple minutes to spare, and it keeps getting better and better. Heath Ledger casts an incredibly large shadow over the role of the Joker. I didn’t hate Jared Leto’s rendition as much as some, but it was still on a different planet from the quality of Ledger’s performance. Joaquin Phoenix may be up to the task though. We see a lot of the Joker before the painted face, and the trailer makes it seem as if you are going to see him transition into full madness. Phoenix is the type of actor who completely falls into a role, and you can feel that in this trailer. From the way he walks to the movement of his dancing, it feels like the Joker. That laugh that they play when he is at the comedy club is perfect. So perfect. I was already excited for this movie, and the first trailer confirmed that excitement while sending it to another level.
